A Note from Dean Linda Schadler

Dear UVM CEMS community,

LS_thumbnail

We made it…and we made progress!

Not only did UVM remain open this entire year, but we also held a graduation ceremony and students thrived in the classrooms and labs, giving our instructors higher overall course ratings than 2020! Check out our Commencement photo gallery on Facebook

In other good news, we are expecting the largest class ever in the fall. New research grants and spending are up significantly, and we approved phase 2 of the curriculum transformation. We have much to be grateful for, and I am so very proud of everyone in CEMS for remaining student-focused all year, yet continuing to build towards achieving our strategic plan

If you would like to see what students applying to CEMS this year saw, please link to our virtual live tours! With Go Pros on our heads, we guided students from afar through the space, and took their questions in real-time. It’s not Hollywood, but it was a hit!

We have other exciting news. Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Jianke Yang was named a University Distinguished Scholar. This is a lifetime appointment recognizing his outstanding scholarly work. Professor Yang is also the new Chair of Mathematics and Statistics. Helen Read, Senior Lecturer, will be the Vice Chair. Special thanks go to Professor Jeff Buzas for his excellent leadership for the last seven years during many transitions in CEMS, including the big move to Innovation Hall.

I am also pleased to announce that Matthew Manz is our new Director of Student Services. We are hiring two new academic advisors in our student services office and a new career readiness advisor. CEMS student services provides outstanding support for our students, including job and internship preparation and connecting our students to resources across campus. With these new hires, student support will be even stronger.

Enjoy the stories below, and as always, we look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

Linda

Lake Health Donna Rizzo

CEMS’s Donna Rizzo (a 2021-22 University Scholar) worked on a new study, led by UVM researcher Jesse Gourevitch, that explores the benefits of phosphorus reduction on tourism, real estate, and human health in Lake Champlain. Taking action on phosphorus in Lake Champlain would bring tens of millions in dollars in benefits to Vermonters. Learn more.
