Physicians Leadership Program 2022

UVM’s program aims to strengthen physician leaders in this 21st century healthcare landscape as individuals develop and refine their skills in four key areas:

  • emotional intelligence and leadership
  • building high-performing teams and organizations
  • quality improvement
  • health finance

The program includes both on-site sessions, detailed below, and an online component with additional activities and resources to deepen our collective understanding of these important issues. Participants’ voices and experiences are central to this learning. Therefore, we help participants apply tools, techniques, and insights to their situation/organization and its culture.

Melissa Arthur
Melissa Arthur

Melissa Arthur is the Director of Behavioral Science for the Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital located in Syracuse, New York. She has held this position for over 20 years. Dr. Arthur also holds a joint faculty appointment as Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University. 

She emphasizes the importance of the doctor patient relationship while focusing on communication skills.  She has earned four degrees from Syracuse University with the final degree being a doctorate in counseling education. She educates and supports 46 residents and 12 faculty members to care for patients with compassion, while also assisting them to be cognizant of caring for themselves.




Dael Waxman, M.D
Dael Waxman, M.D.

Dael is an Emeritus Professor of Family Medicine at Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.  Previously Interim Chair and Vice Chair of the Department of Family Medicine there, he also served as  Medical Director of Physician Well-being for Medical Education for Atrium Health and Medical Director of Patient-Centered Programming at Atrium Health - Mercy. He is the owner of Dael Waxman MD, Coaching and Consulting, 

Dr. Waxman is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, did his residency in Family Medicine as well as served as Chief Resident at the University of Arizona and completed a Family Systems Medicine/Psychosocial Medicine Fellowship at the University of Rochester. 

In addition to his medical background, he has received training in and has been integrating person-centered communication skills,  family therapy, clinical hypnosis, mind/body medicine, mindfulness and leadership coaching into teaching, clinical practice, and faculty development for over 30 years.  

He has taught regionally, nationally, and internationally on: physician-patient communication, leadership development, physician burnout and well-being, mindfulness in medicine, developing a patient and family centered culture, family influences on health, and collaboration between mental heath and primary care.

 

Kathy Letendre
Kathy Letendre, MHSA, President, Letendre & Associates LLC

With a passion for helping organizations and leaders achieve outstanding organizational outcomes, I support leaders and teams to make momentous improvements for their patients, their organizations, and their communities.

As an advisor and consultant to executives, leadership teams, and organizations, I thrive when helping others create their excellence advantage. I guide leaders to achieve the highest levels of performance through focusing on the priorities that will significantly improve their impact, and by aligning organizational efforts toward excellence.

Previously a healthcare executive, my expertise in setting a compelling organizational direction, accelerating to excellence, and solidifying execution, enable me to contribute to the transformation of organizations and leaders in all sectors.

Based in Vermont, I consult and speak to audiences, organizations, and leaders striving to be excellent across North America.

Kathy earned her Master’s Degree In Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and her Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.



Keith Robinson
Keith Robinson, MD, Vice Chair of Quality Improvement and Population Health University of Vermont’s Children’s Hospital

Dr. Robinson led several quality improvement projects during medical school, residency, and fellowship. His current role as the Vice Chair of Quality Improvement and Population Health allowed him to integrate improvement science and informatics to improve systems and evaluate performance. His major areas of focus are evaluating the impact of a clinical decision making tool to improve asthma care, improving transition for adolescents to adult care, and implementing a screening program for social determinants of health using a flowsheet he built into Epic for the UVM Health Network.

Keith received a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at St. Michael’s College where he served as Captain and First Lieutenant on St. Michael’s Rescue. He attended medical school at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and completed pediatric residency at UVM Children’s Hospital. His focus during pediatric pulmonology fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill was on quality improvement and informatics. Keith also completed the Intermediate Improvement Science Series and Advanced Improvement Methods courses at Cincinnati Children’s.

Abe Berman

Abe Berman is the Vice President of Revenue Strategy for the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN), returning to the organization in 2021 after five years with UnitedHealthcare.  In this role, he is working to align current and future value based arrangements to support the financial resources the UVMHN needs to meet the needs of the communities we serve. 

Abe has more than a decade of progressive leadership experience in healthcare reimbursement and strategy with expertise in value based care models and payment reform.  He began his previous tenure with UVMHN as a Senior Reimbursement Analyst at UVMMC in 2006 and spent six years at UVM Medical Center serving as the Manager of Revenue Cycle Performance and Interim Director of Contracting and Revenue Strategy before moving to Vermont Managed Care where he was the Director of Finance.  Abe was instrumental in the founding of the OneCare Vermont Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and the creation of programs that were key first steps in UVMHN’s transition from fee for service to value based reimbursement.  At UnitedHealthcare he most recently served as the Network President for the Northeast Region where he was responsible maintaining a geographically competitive and stable provider network.  In this role, he gained invaluable experience in innovative models from the payer perspective that will help continue guiding the UVMHN on its value based care journey. 

Abe holds a BA in Psychology from New York University, an MS in Accountancy from the University of Notre Dame and an MS in Health Care Delivery Science from Dartmouth College.  Outside of work, Abe enjoys a variety of outdoor activities but spends most of his warm weather time cycling or trail running and cold weather time on the slopes.  Abe resides in Shelburne, VT with his wife and teenage daughter.

Rick Vincent, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, The University of Vermont Medical Center and The University of Vermont Health Network Medical Group

Vincent has served as vice president, Finance, for the UVM Medical Group since 2011. He was named interim vice president, Finance, for the UVM Medical Center in 2104. Prior to these roles, Vincent held several other finance and operational positions in the organization, including director, Orthopedics and Cancer Services. He has been with the medical center since 1994.

Vincent earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at the University of Vermont in Burlington. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Administration and Management from St. Michael’s College, Colchester, VT.  He earned a certification as a management accountant from the Institute of Management Accountants and is certified as a medical practice executive by the Medical Group Management Association.

Is there an online component?

Yes, in addition to the on-site time you will be able to access additional activities and resources using our learning management system, Blackboard. You will receive account information prior to the first on-site session.

What are the times of the program?

All sessions will be held 8:00am-5:00pm with a morning and afternoon break and lunch break.

Are meals provided?

Yes, light breakfast items, coffee and lunch will be provided during each session.

Are materials provided?

Yes, materials will be provided in Blackboard and some materials may be distributed in class.   

Is there parking on site?

Yes, there is parking on site.

Am I required to attend all sessions?

For successful completion of the Program, participation in all classroom sessions and online components is required.

Is this program accredited?

Program participants earn a Certificate of Achievement through the University of Vermont Professional and Continuing Education upon successful completion. Participants will earn Continuing Medical Education credits (CMEs).
