Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to recognize and effectively manage emotions in ourselves and with others. Emotional intelligence increases our ability to make good decisions, build relationships, deal with stress, and cope with change. Technical know-how, subject expertise, and IQ only get you so far in business today. Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to manage your emotions and connect with others. This ability is critical in our culturally diverse, dispersed, fast-paced, global workplaces. In this course we will explore the basic concepts of emotional intelligence. You will leave with a general understanding of how to apply EI principles at work.

In this course you will:

  • Understand how Emotional Intelligence relates to effective people management.
  • Develop self-awareness of your own emotions and how these affect your behavior.
  • Understand how your behavior impacts other people and the work.
  • Discuss management techniques for your emotions and behavior (verbal and non-verbal) in work situations.
  • Apply the emotion regulation skills in practice scenarios

The emphasis throughout the course is continued self-awareness while working to know and motivate others. At the conclusion of the course, participants will have an organized, people-focused system in place that can be used – and shared - for positive interpersonal growth with an emphasis on maintaining relationships. There will be one focused proficiency within each of these skill areas: Communication, Managing Conflict, Providing Effective Feedback, and Coaching. Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Modify their communications by taking the perspective of the other person so that they can be well received by their audience.
  • Utilize both disclaimers and the conflict proficiency to navigate a difficult conversation towards a positive outcome while maintaining the relationship.

This class includes:

Module 1 – Strategic Leadership May 16th – Remote/live

Leaders who fully commit to their authored or assigned strategy and align their teams behind the strategy achieve success. They are the champions for the long view, making today’s decisions courageously to keep everyone connected to the strategy.

Module 2 – Productive Leadership May 30th -Remote/live

Functional Competence ● Productive Intent ● Sound Judgment

Execution is the ante for all successful leaders. Today’s leaders must possess the knowledge and intention to deliver results and make decisions that help teams win.

Resources to Support Leadership Learning & Development:

Pre-session Interviews and Assessment

Prior to the Opening Session, each participant will complete an interview with the lead instructor to learn more about skills, desires, fears, and uncertainties. This opportunity builds a foundation of interest and trust and it allows for the customization of upcoming learning experiences. In addition, a personal leadership assessment will be completed by participants in order to gain insight into individual strengths and development opportunities.

Coaching Sessions and Networking

Throughout the MVP Leadership Institute, participants will be able to access 1:1 coaching sessions to support their application of learning to current and future roles within MVP. To support internal networking and support, all learning experiences (classes, opening session, and closing session) will provide time for participants to network with fellow cohort members and share best practices and other reflections.

Leadership Reflection

Underscoring the learning outcomes throughout the various classes and discussions, time will be provided for participants to develop the practice of leadership self-reflection. Each instructor will include a question or two – as well as the time – for participants to courageously contemplate who they are as leaders, what’s working, what’s not working, what assumptions are in play, what obstacles are they facing, and what opportunities do they have. The instructor designed prompts will be aligned with class concepts and learnings. These reflections will have an underlying tone of figuring out how to move forward as a leader at MVP and will be a unique part of the in-person Close-out session held at MVP.

Pre-Work and Mentoring: Linking Learning to Reality

  • We suggest pairing a graduate of the program with a new participant to support their learning and general leadership experiences. This relationship would be non-supervisory and designed to help the learner grow beyond their current comfort zones.

  • Pre-work offered internally at MVP will clarify the intention of the MVP Leadership Institute as well as provide thoughtful best practices for leadership growth. The current pre-work includes having participants view:
